The concept for this website was a user generated, simplistic/interactive travel blog. We have achieved this. We have taken inspiration from Tumblr pages and instagram feeds. The idea of their simplicity is admirable but they are extremely common. So we took the format and added the interactivity (videos, user feedback and user generated images). I believe this has brought the much-needed diversity to our site.

My main role in this site was to produce the video and imagery. I edited several videos for the project using Adobe Premier, Adobe Audition and Adobe Photoshop. The process of editing was straightforward and all packages were self explanatory. The part of the editing that was time consuming was the cutting. I have taken much inspiration for my interviews from the current youtube and vine wave. On these mediums you see fast cuts making for humorous editing. This is fun to watch but it is time consuming. An example of this is “Diary of a badman” (follow link) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_k8i65VWdw

When choosing the sound files to use it was mainly based on how I felt when editing. For example with the interviews I edited the first 10-20 seconds to generate a clear mood in my head, then I selected the backing track that would go with it. When it came to the Ibiza experience video I had to pick the music first to make sure the videos fit to the drop of the beat.

Some of the main issues I experienced were when recording. We formatted our SD card by mistake and wiped all of our data once. The other issue with it was sound. Editing the sound levels was more difficult than anticipated. Partly due to the output only coming from one speaker. My other main issue was the quality of the video. The interview quality was poor and the lighting made it look unprofessional. In the future I would use lighting, a boom mic and a better camera.

In reflection I believe the site has achieved its goals and could with the right enthusiasm and maintenance be a success.

Issues when editing

Editing my videos has been pretty straight forward however there were some minor issues. One of which was my sound. When playing my recordings back i noticed that the sound output was only playing out of one speaker. this was a problem that i did not manage to resolve. however i have managed to find a solution now for future reference. I also found that controlling the audio levels so they went distorted was something that required care and time.
Out of everything i enjoyed editing the party video the most. I had a vision of it in my head and it came out in a similar way. I managed to time the clips perfectly to drop with the beat and i really felt transported when watching it. My only issue was with the quality. It did give it a raw feel but i think in the future i would like to use for purpose HD camera.

3's a crowed

Like I said before the team consists of 3 different personalities and we set the site up to reflect that. Its useful because we felt we reflect the 3 main demographics of our age group in terms of holidays. This gives the site more in terms of volume and also allows us to target a much wider audience. It was also useful as we were all able to supply or source images to get us started.

The tumblr influence.

When we were discussing how wanted our site to look and feel we gravitated towards a tumblresque dimension. We appreciated the raw feel and simplicity of it and believed that the sustainability of a site like this would make it easier for us to maintain and develop.

Example of blogs we viewed are

http://threeguysheadingwest.com/

http://theworldwelivein.tumblr.com/

I also took great direction from the way some 'Instagram' pages are presented now. Some Instagramers take every opportunity at home or abroad to capture the world most beautiful moment. That is something See You There is striving to reproduce.

McLuhan and his Global Village.

With the website being a travel website it would be imposable to create it without acknowledging McLuhan's Theory on our "Global village". Global Village is a term coined by Marshall Mcluhan. He explained how the world has been turned in to a village by digital technology and the freedom and pace of technology. See you there is part of this. We are bringing people together through their experiences and are proud of the fact. We aim to provide a digital environment that makes the user feel as though they are already at the destination they are researching.

The interviews!

So as a group we interviewed willing participants in order to bring another dimension to our website. As the website wasn't live at the time we decided to interview in a light hearted fashion that would simply demonstrate the mood of the website. The long term goal for the website Is to have interviews by topic, possibly on a monthly basis. Eventually dependent on the success of the website i'd like to see these small supplements develop in to something more of a documentary. My inspiration for this would be something like 'Noisy' https://www.youtube.com/user/noisey or 'Vice' https://www.youtube.com/user/vice

My Personal Inspiration

So for the site we decided it would be cool to have some videos and stop motions. The idea was that once the site was live we could do a monthly supplement interviewing users and using their images for the home page stop motion.

My inspiration was us as a team. We all enjoy different types of holidays. I enjoy partying, Arfa enjoys site seeing and Eliana enjoys drinking cocktails on the beach. This inspired me to create a stop motion or a video for each of these different themes and pages.

To create the videos i pooled together the teams images and videos plus what we had already gathered from volunteers. On top of this I used music from free mixtapes with no copy rights.

My favourite video so far is the Ibiza experience video. I like this one because all of the video was filmed on a camera phone. this gives the video the gritty feel most of us experience when in Ibiza night clubs.

The budget.

The Budget for this website was minimal and as all of the content is user generated we had minimal outgoings.

The Banner!

The next step was creating the Banner. Like the Logo this was created on Photoshop using images given to us by participants in the website.

The Logo!

After much deliberation we decided on a final Logo for the website.

Plan B's

Obviously things rarely go to plan in life. but that is why we have plan b's. We originally began to film to the schedule but we experienced various difficulties such as organisation and equipment failure. In the end however our plan B came together well and we managed to get all of our filming done in a few days.

19th February- 1st day of filming

3rd March- 2nd day of filming

5th March- 3rd day of filming and final day

This gave me a lot more time to focus on the editing of the videos and stop motions.

Project Proposal

Project Proposal
By:
Eliana Hajicosta, Lawrence Hills-Walters and Arfa Shah

Site’s Purpose

This semester the task is to create an interactive website which is unique in content and utilizes different programmes in order to create an engaging and fun experience. We have decided to continue on from a site completed last semester by one of our group members because we feel that the foundation is there and all we have to do is improve it by including more interactive and engaging content. The aim of the website is to present a contemporary feel to a travel website. We have taken the basic model found in many travel blogs such as http://theworldwelivein.tumblr.com or http://tinywrld.com and looked at them carefully. We want allow users to feel a sense of togetherness with other users and to also allow the user to send in their own images to be displayed on the website so that travellers all over the world can relate to each other's experiences. The theory underpinning our website is Marshall McLuhan's suggestion that the world has become a "global village" and that because of advancements in technology, people are more aware of one another even if they live in different parts of the world and are able to interact with one another by a simple click of a button. We want our users to feel that they can experience different cultures and attractions just by logging onto our website.

Software, Equipment and Locations

We will mainly be filming in Kingston Town Centre and Kingston University. We will use a professional Canon camera, a tripod, a boom microphone to prevent unnecessary sound interference. The camera is the most vital piece of equipment as it will display the development of the project at all stages of production. We plan on using a variety of Media such as video animation, themes, images and hyperlinks. The most important software we will be using is WordPress. WordPress is not only a free web template hosting service; it is an open source for blogging. We decided to purchase a domain name so that we more creative control in regards to layout, content and colours. We will also use Adobe Photoshop to create our website logo and banner. During the post-production stage of our project, we will use Adobe Premiere Pro for editing our footage and also for creating our stop motion animation to make our home page more interactive and eye-catching. Adobe After Effects will be used for special effects such as “Masks”, “3D Effects” and “Shape Tools” after we have edited our videos using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Site Content & Demographic

We aim to present a stylish and youthful feeling website to audience of university goers. The age range we hope to reach should be between 18-30, however to narrow it down further 20-25 is where we see the majority of our audience coming from. The content of the site will consist of 3-4 (main) pages. We would to like create a welcome page that consists of a simple stop motion animation. We took inspiration from fashion houses such as Prada or Louis Vuitton who have previously done similar animation showcasing the season's highlights. We believe it is integral to keep the website light by giving users the option to simply browse. Pictures paint a thousand words so we will have a photo page. This may seem self-explanatory however keeping in tradition of the contemporary we wish to put our own flair on it. We would like to have a page for the people. On this page we wish to have surveys of top destinations for fields like (skiing, adventure, sun and fun). We also want to interview individuals and asking them to explain their best experiences abroad. We want to edit the videos to that they are stylish and relevant. The aim is to make our users submit their own interviews in hope that we upload them.

Project Timeline

Pre-Production:
This stage will include research of various travel sites in order to analyse the basic elements of a travel site and brainstorm the positives and negatives of these sites. We will also take the time to gather images of the locations we want to use, purchase a domain name, have the basic layout set up and a filming schedule. All of these stages will be found on our individual blogs. We aim to finish the pre-production by 18th February.
Production:
This stage will involve inputting the content onto the website, developing the logo and website banner, filming and creating the stop motion animation simultaneously. We aim to finish this stage by March 5th.
Post-Production:
At this stage we will be editing the footage and inputting it onto our website, adding the final pictures onto web pages and adding the final touches to the website. We will also present the website to our target audience and ask them to fill out a questionnaire. We aim to finish the website by 15th March.
